About the Portable Academic Lapdesk

About the Portable Academic Lapdesk

Who: Joel and Jackie Wells, from Spokane, Washington USA who have spent the last 9 years working in Southern Africa.

The Inception: While visiting the rural Schools of Malawi, the need for desks and school materials became increasingly apparent. Schools in rural Africa range from a simple brick building with very basic classrooms to a classroom under a tree. For the most part the schools are lacking the very basics of materials, including desks and chairs for both the students and the teachers. There are very few school supplies, very few if any books, and very little materials for the teachers or students to use. It is common for the ratio of students to teachers to be 100 to 1 or even higher. This scenario is repeated in most rural settings of Africa.

The PAL can make a difference !!

The PAL (Portable Academic LapDesk) is an innovative educational tool that provides a solution to the shortage of educational materials for both students and teachers. Joel and Jackie Wells, consulted with teachers, health providers and child development specialists to produce the lapdesk which will be produced in the Pacific Inland Northwest. The copyrighted graphics contain the alphabet, numbers, a ruler, mathematical times table, a world map and much more. The PAL is lightweight, waterproof, UV resistant and easily portable.

In addition to the PAL a Lesson Plan Book will be provided to the teachers. The Lesson Plan Book will contain approximately 300 lessons that can be taught in math, grammar, science, geography, history, health, etc., all these lessons coordinate with the PAL.

Permission to distribute the PAL has already been granted in Malawi, Zambia, and South Africa with interest from Uganda, Kenya, and Zimbabwe.  The PAL is in English as the initial thrust is into the SADC nations where vast areas were colonized by the British.  English is a primary language in most of these nations and is taught in school.   Eventually the PAL will be translated into French, Spanish, Portuguese and additional language to reach other African, as well as emerging and developing nations.

In these regions alone there are over 70 million children between the ages of 6 and 12; these children deserve the chance to have a proper education.

You can be a part of this innovative solution !!
