“Our mission is to impact impoverished emerging and developing nations by empowering teachers with educational resources that enhance their ability to teach and instills in students a lifelong desire to learn.”

About the Portable Academic Lapdesk (PAL)

About the Portable Academic Lapdesk

Who: Joel and Jackie Wells, from Spokane, Washington USA who have worked in Southern Africa since 2003.

The Inception: While visiting the rural Schools of Malawi, the need for desks and school materials became increasingly apparent. Schools throughout rural Africa range from a simple brick building with very basic classrooms to a classroom under a tree. For the most part the schools are lacking the very basics of materials, including desks and chairs for both the students and the teachers. There are very few school supplies, very few if any books, and very little materials for the teachers or students to use. It is common for the ratio of students to teachers to be 100 to 1 or even higher. This scenario is repeated in most rural settings of Africa.

The PAL can make a difference !!

The Portable Academic Lapdesk (PAL) is an innovative educational tool that provides a solution to the shortage of educational materials for both students and teachers. Joel and Jackie Wells, consulted with teachers, healthcare providers and child development specialists to produce the Lapdesk. The copyrighted graphics contain the alphabet, numbers, a ruler, mathematical times table, a world map and much more. The PAL is lightweight, waterproof, UV resistant and easily portable.

In addition to the PAL a Teachers Manual will be provided to each teacher. The Manual will contain educational facts that coordinate with all the elements on the PAL. All materials align with required curriculum guidelines. Lessons can be prepared in math, grammar, science, geography, history, health, etc. Permission to distribute the PAL has already been granted in Malawi and Zambia with interest from South Africa, Uganda, Kenya, and Zimbabwe.  The PAL is in English as English is a primary language in most Southern African nations and is taught in school.

Between 2015 and 2030 the number of children under 18 in sub-Saharan Africa will rise from 496 million to 661 million. From 2026 onward sub-Saharan Africa will be the single region with the greatest number of children under 18. (Statistics from UNICEF)

These children deserve the chance to have a proper education.

You can be a part of this innovative solution !!
